We love IBM’s product that allows you to generate PDF documents from your applications rather than Spool Files! The product is 5770TS1 (V7.1) or 5761TS1 (V6R1). The product is free and is easy to install and use. Now you store your output on the IFS in stream files. This is ideal for both printing and archiving of documents. The archiving is improved with some tweaks or modifications to your application to name and store the files in meaningful locations.

A huge advantage exists in that all users know how to manipulate PDF documents. Not true with spool files. This eliminates windowing in a spool file, and general viewing struggles.

While we think it is relatively easy to use and implement, call us if you want to know more or see how we have changed even our own internal invoicing system. For more sophisticated needs, you will need a forms package or document management system. However, there is a strong argument that no new spool files should be created.

Silveredge is currently helping clients upgrade EDI mappings from version 4010 to 5010. By January 1, 2012, all large health care organizations are required to be compliant with version 5010 of the transaction sets to support HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ) and ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision) code set changes. Unlike previous version upgrades, the enhancements for 5010 are significant. Specific documents include: 276/277 Health Care Claim Status Request/Response, 837 Health Care Claim, 270/271 Eligibility Inquiry/Response, and 835 Health Care Payment/Advice.

Version 5010 will bring greater automation and interoperability among health care providers, hospitals, pharmacies, and payers. Organizations can leverage these EDI changes in combination with HIPAA and ICD-10 enhancements in their internal systems to reduce administrative costs.

Four of our consultants attended the Inovis User Conference held in Chicago this week. The Inovis folks in attendance were very knowledgeable and our consultants were impressed with the level of expertise in attendance. Key topics included both new and advanced features to the EDI translation software. Upgrades to automated operations are available. The standards presentation was great with much information regarding both XML and X12.

Silveredge has been doing complex EDI implementations since 1991. As a business partner of Inovis, we believe attending conferences of this sort is important to our customer base. We ensure our consultants are well versed in new features and technologies available. By sending our most talented EDI consultants, they can pass this information to others in our firm.
